Holmgate Primary School and Nursery

Welcome to Year 6

The adults working in Year 6 are:

Miss Broderick – Class Teacher

Mrs Smith - Learning Mentor

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Gibson, Mrs Peace and Mrs Moore

Mrs Guy will teach in Y6 every other Friday

Ash will be in class EVERY Wednesday teaching PE.

Our Learning

Our project this term is 'Do we appreciate what we have?' As part of this topic, we will be looking at the differences between forests in the United Kingdom and the Rainforests in the Amazon rainforest.  Children will also consider interdependence in their environments and the ways in which humans are contributing to climate change, by creating an imbalance in these environments.  Our project will centre around four concept words: stewardship, common good, community and protest.  The children will be exploring what these words mean and making links between these words and their learning.

 Spelling Shed

We will be continuing to use a scheme called Spelling Shed for teaching spellings. Every Friday, children will continue to be tested on their spellings. Their weekly rule can then be practised by playing games online and earning points – new spellings are available online every Friday evening and a paper copy of their spellings is given out on Monday.

Your child’s Spelling Shed login can be found in the first page of their reading record.

Reading

Reading is still a key part of our curriculum and children will each bring a reading book and a reading record home them. Even though your child is now in Year 6, listening to them read, is still as important as ever as it helps them to improve their fluency and pace - which are vital skills to support with their end of year SATs.

In Year 6, children will also have homework every Friday to help prepare them for their SATs.

PE

Children should bring their PE kit to school in a bag on PE days.

Year 6 have PE EVERY Wednesday

Year 6 will then have a second PE lesson EVERY ALTERNATE Thursday

Important Dates

This academic year your children will sit their Year 6 KS2 SATS in: Grammar Punctuation & Spelling, Reading and Maths.

Tests begin on Monday 11th May and finish on Thursday 14th May 2026 and all children will need to be in school during this week.

In order to give our superstars the best possible chance to reach their full potential, please endeavour to keep absence to a minimum prior to these dates.

Seesaw

We will be using Seesaw this year in order for parents to be able to view some of the work that children have been completing during lesson time. Seesaw will also be used to allow teachers to communicate with parents more easily and may be used to occasionally set work for the children.

Your child’s Seesaw login can be found in their reading record.

Your family code for Seesaw has been sent home as a separate letter.

Please let school know if you are struggling to connect to Seesaw so we can help you with this.
